Women Helping All People's Holiday Page

You are going to want to come back for more and more!

Some people think Christmas is about presents,
Santa Claus, reindeer, elves, and christmas trees.
Well, I've got news for you -- it's not! It's about our Lord and Savior
Jesus Christ being born and how he loves all of us. When I go to
Sunday School they teach how the Lord told Mary she was going
to have a baby and she was to name him Jesus, and how he does all
these amazing miracles like letting the blind see again, healing
the sick, and even walking on water.

Let me tell you a little about Christmas in Spain. Christmas in Spain
starts December,8. Christmas in Spain is a lot like Christmas in the U.S.,
it is a very religious holiday to them. They buy trees and ornaments they
also buy a lot of flowers. Did you know that there is a special meat that
costs $22 dollars a pound. All through the streets they say "Feliz Navidad"
which means Merry Christmas.

For good luck in the new year they eat 12 grapes.
If you don't, they believe you will have bad luck. January 5 is
when the Spanish have a big celebration. They celebrate the
three wisemen that brought gifts to baby Jesus,
and they say that is why they give each other presents.

Now I am going to tell you a little about Kwanzaa. Kwanzaa is based
on the seven guiding principles, one for each day of Kwanzaa. It is
celebrated from the twenty-sixth of December to The first of January.
The colors of Kwanzaa is black, red, and green. There are Seven Candles:
there is Umoja (OO-Mo-Jah) which means unity, togetherness, family, and community.
Kujichagulia (Koo-Gee-Cha-Goo-Lee-Yah) which means, self-determination and decisions
in best interest. There's Ujima (OO-Gee-Mah), which means collective work, responsibility, it
reminds you of the obligation to the past, present, and future and to take a role in the
community, society, and world. Ujamaa(OO-Jah-Mah)which means cooperative and economics,
It emphasizes our collective economics, strength and courage. Nia's (Nee-Yah) purpose
is to encourage within ourselves and set personal goals that are beneficial to the community.
Imai (EE-Mah-Nee) Faith focuses on honoring the best of there traditions, drawing upon the best
in ourselves, and to help us to strive for a higher level of life for humankind by affirming our
self-worth and confidence in our ability to succeed and triumph in righteous struggle.
Kuumba (Koo-Oom-Bah) creativity makes use of our creative energies to build and maintain a
strong and vibrant community. Kwanzaa was founded by Dr. Maulana Karenga, in 1966. It is not
a religious or political holiday. It focuses on values, family, community, responsibility, commerce
and self-improvment. Kwanzaa means "first of the harvest" and it is usually celebrated by
African Americans. It is estimated that 18 million people celebrate this holiday.
